தமிழ் ஆண்டு 12 சூரிய மாதங்களாக (மாசங்கள்) பிரிக்கப்படுகிறது. சூரியன் ஒவ்வொரு ராசியிலும் பிரவேசிக்கும் நேரம் — சங்கிரமணம் — ஒவ்வொரு மாதத்தின் தொடக்கத்தை குறிக்கிறது. The Tamil year is divided into 12 solar months (maasangal). Each month begins when the Sun enters a new rasi — an event called sankranti — making these true solar months.
