தமிழ் புத்தாண்டும் பொங்கலும் பெரும்பாலும் ஒன்றாக குழப்பப்படுகின்றன — ஆனால் இவை வேறு வேறு மாதங்களில் வரும் வேறு வேறு நிகழ்வுகள். Tamil New Year and Pongal are often confused for each other — but they are different events that fall in different months.

Tamil New Year falls on the 1st of Chithirai — the day the Sun enters Aries (Mesha rasi). It typically lands on April 13 or 14. This marks the start of the Tamil solar calendar year and the beginning of a new year-name in the 60-year cycle.
பொங்கல் · Pongal
பொங்கல் ஒரு அறுவடை விழா — தை மாதம் (ஜனவரி 14-15 வாக்கில்) வருகிறது. சூரியன் மகர ராசியில் நுழையும் நாளில் (மகர சங்கராந்தி) தைப் பொங்கல் கொண்டாடப்படுகிறது. இது நான்கு நாள் நிகழ்வு: Pongal is a harvest festival celebrated in the Tamil month Thai (around January 14–15). Thai Pongal falls on Makara Sankranti — the day the Sun enters Capricorn. It is a four-day celebration:

சங்கராந்தி என்றால்? · What is Sankranti?

Of these, Makara Sankranti (Sun entering Capricorn) is the most prominent and coincides with Thai Pongal. In short: Tamil New Year is in Chithirai / April; Pongal is in Thai / January — they are not the same event.
