11 கரணங்களில் 4 நிலையானவை (ஸ்திர கரணங்கள்), 7 சுழலும் (சர கரணங்கள்). நிலையான கரணங்கள் கிருஷ்ண பக்ஷத்தின் இறுதியில் ஒரு முறை மட்டுமே வருகின்றன: Of the 11 karanas, 4 are fixed (sthira karanas) and 7 are repeating (chara karanas). The fixed ones appear only once, at the end of the Krishna Paksha:
- நிலையான (4): சகுனி, சதுஷ்பாத, நாக, கிம்ஸ்துக்ந Fixed (4): Shakuni, Chatushpada, Naga, Kimstughna
- சுழலும் (7): பவ, பாலவ, கௌலவ, தைதில, கர, வணிஜ, விஷ்டி — இவை ஒரு சந்திர மாதத்தில் எட்டு முறை வரிசையாக வருகின்றன (7 × 8 = 56 + 4 நிலையான = 60). Repeating (7): Bava, Balava, Kaulava, Taitila, Gara, Vanija, Vishti — these cycle eight times through the lunar month (7 × 8 = 56 + 4 fixed = 60).

Vishti karanam is also known as Bhadra. It is one of the 7 repeating karanas. Tradition generally advises against beginning auspicious work — weddings, housewarming, travel — during Vishti, as it is considered to carry an inauspicious energy. The weight placed on this varies by tradition.
