What is Tithi?

A tithi is a lunar "day" — there are 30 per lunar month — defined by the angle between the Moon and the Sun.
· What it is
Each tithi corresponds to 12° of the Moon gaining on the Sun. The 30 tithis fall into two fortnights: the waxing fortnight (சுக்ல பக்ஷம் · Shukla Paksha) runs from Prathama (1st) to Pournami (full moon, 15th); the waning fortnight (கிருஷ்ண பக்ஷம் · Krishna Paksha) runs from Prathama again back to Amavasai (new moon, 30th).
· Why the end-time varies
The Moon's orbital speed is not constant — its elliptical path means it moves faster or slower at different points. As a result, a tithi can last anywhere from roughly 19 to 26 hours and rarely aligns neatly with a calendar day. That is why the daily panchangam shows exactly when the current tithi ends.
Vriddhi & Kshaya
When a tithi spans two sunrises — meaning it is "current" on two consecutive days — it is called vriddhi (a repeated tithi). When a tithi begins and ends entirely between two sunrises — so that no sunrise falls within it — it is called kshaya (a skipped tithi). This is why a particular tithi can appear on two days in a row, or can be entirely absent from the calendar.
